BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCE: DEPARTMENT OF CELLULAR PHYSIOLOGY AND METABOLISM
Welcome to the Web site of the Department of Cell Physiology and Metabolism at the Faculty of Medicine, Geneva University. Our department was created in 2003 to gather scientists sharing a similar vision in comprehending mechanisms involved in fundamental cellular physiology as well as in elucidating pathways leading to pathophysiological states such as diabetes. To tackle these ambitious goals, 14 research groups, each specialized in complementing areas and supported by state of the art core facilities work together within the Department. Four clinical affiliates are also cross appointed to nurture translational research. Undergraduate as well as graduate teaching is a central task of departmental members and currently 14 PhD students and 15 post doctoral fellows are actively involved in research. Seminars are organized weekly to stimulate scientific discussions and technology transfer. Our main areas of research are:
- Membrane receptors, and out-side-in signalling
- Edocytosis
- Phagacytosis and intracellular trafficking
- Calcium signalling
- Epithelium morphogenesis
- Intercellular interactions
- Cell adhesion and migration
- Mitochondrial metabolism
- Transcription factors, pancreas development and beta-cell function
- Systemic effect of hormone on glycemia
- Adipose tissue metabolism
- Neuropeptides
- Hepatic anatomy and neuro-radiology
- Non invasive in vivo imaging
