Malignant mesothelioma.

Malignant mesothelioma is a generally fatal thoracic neoplasia that mainly arises from the pleural lining. In the majority of the patients, a history of occupational exposure to asbestos can be elicited. The aim of our research projects is to better understand mesothelioma oncogenesis in order to find therapeutic approaches allowing a better management and control of tumour cell growth and proliferation. Two major problems are encountered with malignant mesothelioma: it is usually diagnosed at advanced stage since it does not demonstrate early symptoms; malignant mesothelioma cells are resistant to classical chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Aims of our projects are:

- To identify new markers for better characterization of the different mesothelioma histotypes
- Define the role of the inflammatory process (inflammatory cells, cytokines and chemokines) in the mesotheliomagenesis, the multiplication and the differentiation of malignant mesothelial cells.
