Simulation-based education: teaching tool to improve individuals' and teams' competencies
Principal Investigator
Simulation-based education: teaching tool to improve individuals' and teams' competencies (In collaboration with Prof. François Clergue - APSI et Prof. Nu V. Vu - UDREM) The goal of medical simulation is to approximate the real clinical environment in a simulated, safe and controlled setting. The recent advent of sophisticated and interactive full-scale mannequins has offered new methods of teaching and evaluation in medical education. Acute care teams such as anaesthesiologists, emergency physicians and intensivists now benefit from a tool that is similar to the flight simulator for pilots. - Currently, our research investigates how the use of this new tool can be used on the one hand to teach technical skills (evaluation and training of new intubation techniques), and on the other hand, to study and improve teamwork skills in medical emergency teams when they manage difficult life threatening situation. - The final goal of our research is to better define the place and the impact of this type of simulation-based education in order to improve patient care and patient safety. Co-investigator, collaborator Au niveau international - Evaluation and comparison of two debriefing methods during simulation-based education (oral versus multimedia debriefing) (Principal Investigator: Dr VN Naik, University of Toronto). - The impact of sleep deprivation on the technical performance of anaesthesiologists (Principal investigator: Dr VN Naik, University of Toronto). - Simulation-based training versus didactic training to teach anesthesia residents to wean patient from cardiopulmonary by-pass (Principal Investigator: Dr HS Joo, University of Toronto).
