Palliative medicine and care
Oncogeriatrics (C. Delbaldo, C. Weber)
· Cancer prevalence and incidence with age. · The role of telomeres in the ageing process and occurrence of cancer : (collaboration I. Irminger & K.-H. Krause). · Age-adapted diagnostic and treatment of cancers : multidimensional evaluation. · Cancer as a model of chronic evolving fatal disease ; rather live with than against according to existing adaptation models (breast cancer) and future ones (prostate cancer, GI cancers). Palliative Medicine (P. Duong, K. Moynier, S. Pautex · Internal and external competence networking. · Symptoms at the end of life life : pain, delirium, depression, nutrition, dyspnoea are independent from a given disease. · Anticipation of mourning through accompaniment measures for the dying and the family or the nearest. · Anticipatory directives within the general ethical frame prevent abuse and neglect ; their application is well adapted to the end of life period ; suicide and euthanasia perspective may be approached in that context. Quality of life of the ageing · Quality of life and well-being are questions that have allowed many studies to emerge, although culturally poorly reproducible. · In geriatrics, quality of life integrates life course itself and it must take into account cognitive decline (WHO collaboration Pr N von Steinbuchel). · Delocalisation of the place of living from home to hospital, then convalescence house, long term care facility, nursing home and finally cemetery requires the mobilisation of sometimes frail reserves. · Ethics and its many different fields offer the possibility to integrate in harmony the societal aspirations of efficiency and of individual happiness within the culturally robust base of our marching civilization.
