Mécanismes cérébraux du comportement et des fonctions cognitives
Notre laboratoire étudie les mécanismes cérébraux du comportement et des fonctions cognitives, chez des sujets normaux et chez des patients neurologiques atteints de lésions cérébrales focales. Notre
recherche concerne en particulier les mécanismes d'attention; la représentation de l'espace; la reconnaissance visuelle des objets et des visages; ainsi que les processus émotionnels et leurs
interactions avec d'autres fonctions cognitives. Un thème de recherche prioritaire concerne le syndrome de négligence spatiale et les troubles associés, tels que extinction perceptive et/ou motrice,
anosognosie, et perception inconsciente.
Un but commun dans ces différents domaines est de mieux comprendre comment différentes régions du cerveau qui sont chacune spécialisées dans l'analyse de différents signaux sensoriels peuvent influencer le fonctionnement des autres régions auxquelles elles sont interconnectées. Par exemple, les patients souffrant de négligence spatiale présentent une perte de perception consciente et d'exploration concernant tous les stimuli dans l'espace opposé à leur lésion (quelle que soit la modalité: visuelle, auditive, etc), même si leur lésion n'atteint pas des aires "sensorielles": ceci suggère que l'activité des régions pariétales (le plus souvent atteinte) joue un rôle majeur influençant l'analyse sensorielle et permettant une représentation consciente des stimuli. De façon similaire, l'analyse de signaux émotionnels dans des régions limbiques (par exemple l'expression émotionnelle ou la direction du regard dans un visage activant l'amygdale) semble capable d'influencer de nombreux processus perceptifs, attentionnels, et mnésiques (par exemple, via des processus de modulation ré-entrants). Notre approche utilise un ensemble de méthodes complémentaires: principalement mesures psychophysiques / comportementales, et neuroimagerie par résonance magnétique fonctionelle (IRMf), aussi bien chez les sujets normaux et les patients neuropsychologiques. Nous collaborons étroitement avec le Laboratoire de Cartographie des Fonctions Cérébrales pour l'utilisation des potentiels évoqués; l'Unité de Neuropsychologie de la Clinique de Neurologie; et le Service de Rééducation de Beau-Séjour. Le laboratoire est lié aux départements des Neurosciences Cliniques et de Physiologie de la Faculté de Médecine, et à la Faculté de Psychologie.
