Functional organisation of the human sexuality

Functional organisation of the human sexuality : from close relationships to cerebral networks

Our group conducts research on human sexual function, sexual behaviour, reproduction, women's health, and gender differences in sexual response. More specifically, our group is interested in studying the different phases of the human sexual function, the associated sexual behaviours and the various sexual dysfunctions that may affect each phase of the human sexual function. In addition, our research focuses on understanding the impact of affective and interpersonal relationships on human sexual behaviour, both in normal adults and in patients with sexual dysfunctions. Our research concentrates on elucidating the mechanisms implicated in sexual behaviour, both at an individual and a couple level.

Our main goal is to better understand both conscious and unconscious mechanisms of the human sexual function. To do so, our approach focuses on clinical sexology and social and sexual neuroscience. More precisely, our group combines current modern experimental methods, including clinical therapies, psychophysical paradigms, and neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 3D-electroencephalogram (3D-EEG), Diffusor tensor imaging (DTI) and Transcranial magnetic stimulations (TMS). We collaborate with the NIC Laboratory for fMRI studies on sexual desire.

In parallel, our group collaborates with the Laboratory for advanced neuroscience at the Syracuse University(New-York).
The national and international development of our field of research will allow a multidimensional conceptualization of the human sexual function and its underlined mechanisms. A better understanding of these mechanisms will help design better therapeutical tools in clinical sexology in patients with sexual dysfunctions and understand the interaction between cerebral plasticity and sexual behaviours in healthy adults.
