Acquisition of medical expertise
Acquisition of medical expertise (In collaboration with Prof. Arnaud Perrier, Dre Martine Louis-Simonet, and Prof. Nu V. Vu - UDREM) Research assistants: Mme Anne Gut, Dre Andrea Rudaz Despite technological advances, the collection of clinical data from the patient through history taking and physical examination remains a major component of the diagnostic process. If this process is sub-optimal, errors may occur. We aim to precise strategies in clinical data collection that may vary, according to clinical experience. We want to test whether training these strategies while teaching the clinical content and increasing the students' awareness of such strategies may improve clinical competence. We also study the reliability and validity of several ways to build the gold-standards to assess clinical competence. Finally, we explore the influence of the learning context on the clinical competence, such as learning in a clinical environment as opposed to learning on a paper vignette. We also explore the relationship between competencies in reasoning and competencies in patient-doctor communication, as well as the longitudinal impact of pregraduate training in patient-doctor communication. Co-investigator Projec' 'Training of patient-doctor relationship' (Principal investigator: Dre Noelle Junod Perron, service de médecine communautaire et de premier recours) Project : « Tutor training does it improve students' learning' » (Principal investigator: Anne Baroffio, UDREM) Project: 'Identification of aspects that influence students' evaluation of the overall quality of clerkships and learning in clinical settings' (Principal investigator: Dre Margaret Gerbase, UDREM) International collaboration Exportability of teaching and assessment materials related to clinical reasoning.
