Intensive care
The ICU patient requires an adapted monitoring and treatment according to his clinical condition. Tubes and catheters are often needed to assure this monitoring and therefore involve complications
related by the gesture of placing these apparatus and result in an increased risk of nosocomial infections. N. Schütz & K. Bendjelid are working on the developpement of alternatives ways to monitor
patients and obtain the information necessary to their treatment. K. Bendjelid, in collaboration with the other members of the group, uses his abilities in echocardiography to analyse the interaction
between the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system during mechanical ventilation.
Mechanical ventilation delivers respiratory assistance for patients presenting acute respiratory distress. Commonly, to ensure the patient's comfort and enable the delivery of artificial ventilation, sedatives are given. To this day the level of sedation that best suits ICU patients is still unknown. M. Treggiari & S. Brunner are currently studying this in order to define therapeutic limits for sedation In parallel, C-P. Heidegger is working on understanding the transitional phase between mechanical and spontaneous ventilation.
