Pathogenesis and treatment of food allergy

Our group is working on the pathogenesis and treatment of food allergy. We have a research grant from the SNSF to subsidize our main project, namely the role of T lymphocytes form the gastrointestinal tract in food allergy. We utilize a murine model of food-induced anaphylaxis, with similar characteristics than food allergy in humans. Various immunological parameters such as cytokines, antibody titers are compared according to the allergic status of the mouse (allergy or tolerance). By using this model, we could highlight the role of Peyer's patches T cells through IL-10 secretion to promote tolerance to foods.
No proactive treatment of food allergy is currently available. By extending our findings on the pathogenesis of the disease, we test various infectious agents known to stimulate local IL-10 production to down-modulate, or to prevent food allergy. Other immunomodulatory agents are tested in collaboration with biotech companies.
